JIU JITSU UNIFORM GUIDE
GI & NO-GI ESSENTIALS
Whether you’re brand new to Jiu-Jitsu or getting your child started, having the right gear helps you feel confident and ready to roll. Here’s what you need to know about training attire for both Gi and No-Gi classes.
GI: TRADITIONAL BJJ UNIFORM
In Gi class, we wear the traditional Jiu Jitsu kimono, known as a Gi. It includes:
- Jacket (Top)
- Pants
- Belt (your belt color shows your rank)
You can purchase a Gi from us directly, or from any retailer you like! We recommend a lightweight, pre-shrunk Gi, especially for kids and beginners.
Need a kids’ Gi?
We really like the Elite Sports Gi listed on Amazon. It is affordable, arrives quickly, and holds up great to training! Click the button below to purchase it from Amazon
Elite Sports Kids GiDon’t have a Gi yet? No problem!
You can borrow or rent one from us during class for $10 per use. Just let a coach know before class starts!
WHAT TO WEAR UNDER YOUR GI
What you wear under your Gi can make a big difference in your comfort during training, and ultimately, it’s all about what feels best for you. That said, here are a few suggestions to help you get started:
For Everyone:
- Rash Guard (short or long sleeve): These help prevent mat burns, wick away sweat, and keep everything in place during training.
- Compression shorts or spats/leggings: These offer support, reduce friction, and are ideal for hygiene and comfort.
For Women:
- Sports bra (under rash guard or shirt): Choose a comfortable, supportive option made for movement.
- Leggings or compression shorts: Great for coverage and comfort during rolls.
For Men:
- Compression shorts or athletic underwear: Avoid boxers or loose-fitting undergarments.
- Some men prefer to wear a rash guard or athletic tee under the Gi top, while others choose to go without—just make sure you’re comfortable and covered.
Please avoid: Loose t-shirts, regular underwear, or anything with buttons or zippers under the Gi, as these can shift, tear, or become uncomfortable during training.
Comfort, hygiene, and coverage are key; when in doubt, go with fitted, moisture-wicking gear!
NO-GI: ATHLETIC CLOTHING ONLY
No-Gi training is done without the traditional kimono. Instead, you’ll wear tight-fitting athletic wear–no pockets, zippers, or loose fabric. This helps prevent injuries and keeps training safe.
For Women (including kids):
- Leggings or yoga shorts
- Rashguard or fitted workout-style top
For Men (including kids):
- Shorts (with or without spats)
- Rashguard or fitted t-shirt
We have Wise Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi shorts and rashguards available for purchase at the gym if you’d like to represent the team on the mats! You can also order our branded rashguards online through Cruz Combat using the link below:
View Our RashguardsYou’re not required to wear Wise-branded No-Gi gear. Just like with the Gi, you’re welcome to purchase training apparel from any retailer you prefer—as long as it’s appropriate for grappling (no zippers, pockets, or loose material).
Baggy shorts, loose shirts, or anything with buttons or zippers can be dangerous—avoid wearing these to class.
Pro Tip: Rashguards are a great investment! They’re more durable, stay in place, and help protect your skin during training.
OTHER ESSENTIAL GEAR
To train safely and comfortably, you’ll need a few more basics:
Mouthguard
Strongly recommended during sparring and live rolls. Protect those teeth!
Water Bottle
Hydration is key for performance and recovery. Bring one to every class
Flip Flops or Slides
Always wear shoes off the mat and especially to the bathroom.
Having clean, well-fitted gear is essential—not just for your comfort, but for your training partners’ safety too.
KEEP IT CLEAN
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR GEAR
No matter what you wear–always show up with clean gear.
Make sure your Gi, rashguard, or workout clothes are freshly washed before each class. Good hygiene is part of being a great teammate!
Uniforms & Rashguards:
- Wash both your gi and nogi uniform after every class; no re-wearing unwashed gear
- Air-dry your uniform when possible to prevent shrinking and mildewIf possible, Rotate Between Multiple Gis
Mouthguards:
- Rinse your mouthguard before and after every class
- Store it in a ventilated case (not loose in your bag!)
- Never place it on the mats, benches, or other surfaces
- Clean both the guard and the case regularly with warm water and soap
If you ever have questions about gear, sizing, or what to bring, feel free to ask a coach. We’re always happy to help you or your child feel comfortable and ready to roll!
